A gimmick sells out once.

That's the whole test, and it's a brutal one. A gimmick can absolutely empty a shelf — one time. A good photo and a clever ad will do that.

What a gimmick never does is empty it again. Because the people who bought it the first time don't reorder, they don't hand one to a friend, and they certainly don't come back for a second. This one ran out more than once over the summer, and a real share of those orders came from addresses we had already shipped to. That's not a marketing claim. That's just what the shipping list looks like.

The second order is the real review.

A star rating is written in the first week, when the thing is new and shiny and everyone is a little impressed. A second order is written in month four — after a full summer of actually using it, after the novelty has worn off completely, by someone who now knows exactly what they're buying and chooses to spend money on it again.

That's the pattern that keeps emptying the shelf. Same name, same street, second order. Sometimes it's a spare for the boat. More often it's for someone who watched them use it at a cookout and asked where to get one.

It runs out in July because July is when it earns its keep.

This isn't a product people buy in February. It sells out in the middle of summer, in the exact weeks when a bottle goes from cold to disappointing in about the time it takes to carry it outside.

10–15 minutes in the freezer is all the stick needs — and most owners skip even that by simply leaving theirs in there permanently, between the ice cream and the frozen peas. Pour your first glass, slide the stick down the neck, and the wine chills from the inside out in minutes. Not the half hour the fridge wants. Not the "we'll open it later, it's still warm" that ends the evening before it starts.

Nothing melts, so nothing gets watered down.

Ice keeps wine cold by slowly ruining it. Every cube that melts waters the wine down, until the last pour tastes thin and flat. And the bucket itself hogs the table, sweats a puddle onto the wood, and still needs refilling halfway through.

This works the opposite way. The cold lives inside a sealed stainless-steel stick — nothing melts, so not a drop of water reaches your wine. The last glass tastes exactly like the first, only colder. It also means it works fine where there's no ice machine and the freezer is the size of a shoebox: a boat galley, a cabin, a camper, a city apartment.

The cheap lookalikes never sell out twice.

You have almost certainly seen a version of this for six dollars, and you were right to be suspicious of the gap. Here's what's in it. The lookalikes are hollow plastic or paper-thin steel with barely any mass — and mass is the entire product. Cold has to be stored somewhere. A thin shell holds a few minutes of it, drops the temperature briefly, and quietly gives up. That is precisely why so many people assume this whole category is a gimmick: they met the copy first.
