For everyone who has carried an ice bucket down the garden

Bin the ice bucket. Keep the cold.

Ten minutes into the barbecue it's a bowl of lukewarm water, the rosé's watered down and the bottle's warm again anyway. Turns out the bucket was the problem the whole time.

The questions people ask before they buy
Is this just a gimmick?

It's the first thing most people think, and it was far and away the most common doubt in our own customer survey. Fair enough — from a photo it's a metal stick.

Here's what it actually is. A solid, food-safe stainless-steel rod that lives in your freezer. Because it goes inside the bottle instead of standing the bottle in something cold, it pulls the heat out from the middle of the wine rather than working its way in through the glass. That's why it's minutes rather than a slow wait — and why there's no ice involved, so nothing melts into your wine and thins it out.

It isn't new science. It's the same idea as a frozen glass, done properly and sized for a bottle. What it isn't is a plastic sleeve you have to remember to freeze the day before, or a bucket of ice that turns your last two glasses into cold water.

The honest test is what people say after the first barbecue they use it at. It's rated 4.7 out of 5 across 1,422 reviews, and the most common review on the page is some version of "I didn't think this would work". If it doesn't do what we've said here, send it back within 30 days and we'll refund it.

How long does it actually stay cold?

Two different numbers, and we'll give you both straight.

Getting cold: the stick needs 10–15 minutes in the freezer as a minimum — longer is better, which is exactly why it just lives in there rather than going back in a drawer. Slide it into a room-temperature bottle and you're pouring something properly cold within minutes.

Staying cold: up to about three hours at the table. That's a barbecue — from the first burger to the last glass — without the bottle going back to the fridge between pours and without a bucket sweating a ring into the table.

What it won't do is keep a bottle cold all afternoon in direct sun, and we're not going to claim otherwise. If a bottle of wine lasts you all day, you were never the problem.

What exactly do I get?
  • 2 stainless-steel chiller sticks — food-safe, dishwasher-safe, and happiest living in the freezer.
  • 2 aerating pour spouts — clear acrylic, they twist onto the top of the stick and air the wine on the way to the glass. No drips down the label.
  • 2 bottle stoppers — to seal whatever survives the afternoon.
  • 30-day money-back guarantee and free UK shipping.

One kit is a stick, a spout and a stopper. Two kits arrive in the box.

Do I need to pour some wine out first?

Yes — pour your first glass, then drop the stick in. The stick takes up room in the neck, so a bottle filled right to the cork will spill over.

So the order is: pour a glass, slide the frozen stick in, twist the pour spout on top. From there you serve straight through the spout and the bottle stays out on the table with you.

Why not just buy a cheap one from a marketplace?

Because they aren't the same object. The cheap ones are hollow plastic or a thin tube of gel. They're light, and light is the problem: there's almost no cold stored in them, so they take the edge off a bottle for a few minutes and then sit there warming up alongside the wine.

Ours is solid food-safe stainless steel with a machined acrylic aerating spout. The weight is the point — it's what lets it pull a room-temperature bottle down properly and then hold it there through a long afternoon, and it's the difference between something that lives in your freezer for years and something you bin in August.

For years I lugged an ice bucket out to every barbecue. Fill it at the sink, tip in whatever's in the ice tray, carry it down the garden with both hands, set it on the table like the job was done.

Ten minutes later, the honest version: the ice has gone. It's a bucket of lukewarm water with a bottle standing in it. The label has come away in the wet. There's a puddle on the table where you set it down. And the wine is roughly as warm as it was when you carried it out — except now the last couple of glasses taste thin and watery, because the melt got in.

I blamed the weather. I blamed the ice. I bought a bigger bucket. It took me an embarrassingly long time to work out the obvious bit: the ice bucket was never the answer. It was the problem.

And the rest of us aren't doing any better

  • "Five minutes in the freezer." Found ninety minutes later, half-frozen, the cork pushed up, and the fizz ruined.
  • The wet tea towel. Works, sort of — if you have somewhere cold and breezy to hang a bottle and twenty minutes nobody's waiting on. At a barbecue you have neither.
  • Ice cubes straight in the glass. Now you're drinking cold, weak rosé, and everyone at the table watched you do it.
  • Back and forth to the fridge. Two minutes cold, then it sits out in the sun again, and you've missed half the conversation.

Every one of those is the same mistake in a different outfit: trying to chill a bottle from the outside, in a garden, in July.

Put the cold inside the bottle and the bucket has nothing left to do.

The Lindner & Co Wine Chiller is a slim, food-safe stainless-steel stick that lives in your freezer — always frozen, always ready. Pour your first glass, drop it straight in, and the wine chills from the middle out. No ice. Nothing melting. Nothing to carry down the garden.

How it works at a barbecue

Freezer, bottle, table. That's the whole routine.

The Wine Chiller stick stored in the freezer drawer, always ready
1

It lives in the freezer

10–15 minutes in there is the minimum — longer is better. So just leave it in. Frozen and waiting is the whole point: it's ready the second someone says the words "shall we eat outside".

2

Pour a glass, drop it in

Pour your first glass, then slide the frozen stick into the bottle. It chills the wine from the inside — cold in minutes, and nothing melts into it on the way.

3

Carry the bottle, not the bucket

Serve through the aerating pour spout. The bottle stays out on the table with you — and the spout airs every pour, so the wine tastes better too.

Cold for the first glass. Still cold for the last.

"As someone who truly loves wine, this wine cooling stick has made a big difference for me. It keeps the wine cold for a long time and looks really elegant. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a better wine experience."

That's the half the bucket never managed. Getting a bottle cold is round one — keeping it cold out in the garden, up to about three hours, without a puddle on the table and without anything melting into the wine, is the part that actually saves the afternoon.

The reckoning

Six things that change the day the bucket stays in the cupboard

Nothing melts, so nothing gets watered down

No ice means no meltwater. The last glass out of the bottle tastes like the first one, not like the bottom of a bucket.

It's cold in minutes, not "sometime later"

The frozen steel sits in the middle of the wine and pulls the heat out from there. A room-temperature bottle is drinkable within minutes of the stick going in.

There's nothing to carry

A full bucket is a two-hand job, a wet job, and a trip back to the kitchen when it's warm. The stick is already in the bottle, and the bottle was coming out anyway.

The bottle stays on the table

Cold from the first pour to the last — up to about three hours. No relay to the fridge, no bottle disappearing indoors halfway through the burgers.

No puddle, no ring, no peeled label

Nothing sweats, nothing overflows, nothing soaks the tablecloth. It just sits in the bottle doing its job quietly.

It airs the wine as you pour

The clear acrylic spout opens the wine up on its way to the glass, so it tastes better — and pours clean, with no drips down the neck.

The people most convinced by it started out doubting it.

"I was actually a bit skeptical at first, but the wine cooling stick has truly exceeded all my expectations. Even on warm summer days, it keeps my wine perfectly chilled for hours. I no longer need bulky ice buckets."

Fair — a steel stick sounds like a gadget, right up until the first barbecue where nobody has to go and refill anything. If you've been hauling the bucket out year after year, it isn't because you love it. It's because until now, that was the only thing there was.

"What a brilliant invention! Both the quality of the materials and the clever functionality make the wine cooling stick worth every penny. I've already bought several as gifts, it's simply perfect!"

Which is why the second one rarely stays in the house — everyone knows one host who is still, in this day and age, carrying a bucket of ice down the garden. And if there's a barbecue in the diary this weekend:

★★★★★

"Fantastic service and fast delivery! The wine cooler arrived earlier than expected and turned out to be the perfect gift. I felt confident the whole way thanks to clear updates and friendly customer support."
