It is a very particular sort of irritation. You have two browser tabs open. The products in them are, as far as the camera is concerned, the same object: a silver rod, a black spout, a glistening bottle of white in the background. One costs about eleven pounds. The other costs nearly thirty. And somewhere at the back of your mind sits every kitchen gadget you have ever had to buy twice.

Dozens of comments under wine-chiller advertisements, in more or less the same words: it looks lovely, but surely the cheap one is the identical thing. It is a fair suspicion. What is actually inside the steel

Held in the hand, two chiller rods can feel much the same. The difference appears when you ask what each one is filled with. The inexpensive versions we have seen are essentially a hollow shell — thin metal around plain water. They take an age to freeze, and once in the bottle they give their cold back to the room rather quickly.

The Lindner & Co rod is 304 food-grade stainless steel around a sealed cooling core.
