A couple toasting with wine at the dining table

Wedding Gift for a Couple Who Like Wine: Ideas and Prices

Give something there are two of, or something both use at the same time. Two sets of steel ice cubes, or one chiller stick that sits on the table between them. The rule for couple gifts is simple: if only one of them can use it at a time, it quickly becomes hers or his — and then it is not a couple gift any more.

Wedding, housewarming or joint Christmas gift?

The price level is what separates them.

Wedding gift: £40–120 is usual from one person or a couple. Going in with others on something larger is common and sensible.

Housewarming: £20–45. Something that sits out in the new home gets seen every day.

Joint Christmas gift: £25–60. Here what matters is that it gets used in everyday life, not that it is large.

Why "two of something" is the rule

Because a couple gift only one of them can use gets assigned to one of them within a month. One wine glass is a gift to whoever picks it up first. Two sets of ice cubes is a gift to both.

The exception is things that sit between them: a chiller stick in the bottle on the table serves both at once, and so does an ice bucket. If they have just moved in together, it may also be worth knowing how wine and glasses should be stored at home.

What to avoid

A set of six glasses. They have probably received three sets already, and glassware is a matter of taste rather than kit.

An expensive bottle for "your tenth anniversary". Wine meant for ageing needs proper storage, and few people have it.

Anything engraved with names and a date. It locks the gift to one occasion and makes it impossible to exchange.

If the gift should be usable the same evening it is given, a chiller stick is among the safest — it solves a problem they both have, every time they open a bottle.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a normal wedding gift in the UK?

£40–120 per guest is common. Where several go in together, the total often lands between £150 and £400.

Are wine accessories too small for a wedding gift?

On their own they can be. Combine two items, or put your gift together with someone else's toward something larger.

What do you give a couple who have everything?

Something that solves temperature. Most have glasses, a corkscrew and a stopper — few have anything that holds a bottle right after opening.

Is engraving a good idea?

Rarely. It makes the gift impossible to exchange and ties it to a single occasion.

What is a good housewarming gift for wine drinkers?

Something that sits out in the new home. It gets seen daily and takes no drawer space.

Can I give a couple the same thing I would give one person?

Yes, but check there are two of it, or that both use it at the same time.
